A man has died and a woman is in hospital fighting for life after a home became “engulfed” in flames in Sydney’s west on Tuesday morning.
Firefighters were called to the single-story home on Eltham Street in Blacktown about 5am following reports of a fire.
The man and woman, as well as a third person, were pulled from the home by Fire and Rescue NSW.
The man, who is believed to be in his 60s, was treated by paramedics but died at the scene. The woman, aged in her 80s, has been taken to Westmead Hospital in a critical condition.
Speaking on 2GB on Tuesday morning, Fire and Rescue NSW Superintendent Luke Unsworth said early reports suggested a third person was also pulled from the home during the rescue, but their condition is unknown at this point.
“One person was potentially a neighbour. They had entered the property in an attempt to rescue some other people. We are still trying to piece things together,” he said.
An investigation into the fire is under way and anyone with information is urged to contact police.
