Metricon has been named as the number one home builder in Australia for the seventh year in a row, according to the Housing Industry Association (HIA)’s Colorbond Steel Housing Top 100 Report.
The report, which ranks the top 100 residential builders in Australia based on builds commenced, was released today at the Construction Outlook Breakfast in Melbourne.
Metricon saw 5,969 starts across Victoria, Queensland, New South Wales and South Australia.- Last year it saw 6,052 new builds.
The news comes despite Metricon reportedly facing many financial difficulties this year, as have all businesses in the sector. Metricon’s founder and CEO Mario Blasin also suddenly died in May too.
Metricon CEO Peter Langfelder said he was proud of Metricon’s ability to navigate throughout the difficult times.
“Escalating construction costs, weaker consumer confidence, consecutive central bank interest rate increases, rising inflation plus speculation around the industry’s stability all conspired against us and our competitors alike,” he said.
“Despite this, we managed to deliver 5,969 new Metricon homes to Australian customers during the past year. This is a very tangible proof point of our continued business strength.
“We’re very proud to be ranked number one for the seventh consecutive year and to have grown Metricon’s share of the national residential build market during this challenging period for the construction industry. This is a demonstration of the dedication of our team, our passion for what we do, and most importantly the Australian families we do it for.
Peter Langfelder, Metricon CEO
“Much of the credit for our success must go to our staff, trades and suppliers whose in-depth knowledge, expertise and hard work has meant we’ve been able to deliver homes that are matched to the unique lifestyles and needs of our customers.
“Metricon’s sharp focus over the next 12 months is to continue to execute quality builds as quickly and efficiently as possible whilst maintaining equilibrium in the pipeline.
“We have previously said that our company has a proven history of success and remains strong and viable, with the full support of our key stakeholders – this remains the case today.”

Despite a sharp decline in new build starts, from 4,205 last year to 1,980 this year, BGC made tenth spot, down from sixth, on a national basis. This makes BGC the largest home builder in WA, with second-place ABN Group recording 1,697 new builds in the state during the year.
Michael Bartier, BGC Housing Group Executive General Manager, said the the decline in new builds reflected the responsible approach taken by the company to manage the pipeline of work from the stimulus grants in 2020 and 2021.
“While the results are pleasing for us it’s not about the numbers but doing the right thing by our customers,” said Mr Bartier.
“We are solely focused on delivering quality new homes to our customers and navigating the challenges the industry is currently facing with material and labour constraints and we have a number of strategies in play to achieve that.

“These are unprecedented times being faced by the industry and we have shifted our entire focus to delivering homes to clients in a safe and sensible way.”
