A new sponsor and a new theme will greet attendees to the Monaco Yacht Show 2022, where visitors can expect to be educated about the very best in yachting and witness the amalgamation of A$4.3 billion worth of supremely seductive superyachts.
The cream of the superyacht industry will be rubbing shoulders with clients, exhibitors and the marine press over four days of nautical exposition. This year’s show will focus on attracting new buyers to the industry, with an emphasis on adventure and the discovery of new experiences.
Despite the effects of the Covid-19 pandemic, the 2021 edition of the Monaco Yacht Show hosted 19,000 visitors with over 450 exhibitors and 102 superyachts docked in Port Hercule. Notable vessels included 94-metre megayacht Viva, 85-metre explorer yacht Victorious and 80-metre superyacht Tatiana.
All of the features we have come to expect from the world’s premiere yacht show will be present, including the insightful Monaco Yacht summit, where big names in the yachting industry will discuss pressing issues such as sustainability and emissions reduction.
This year’s show will combine the car deck with a new adventure area where you will be able to see some very exciting water toys, tenders and even off road vehicles, perfect for an adventurous explorer yacht expedition.
Today, charter clients want to drive all-terrain vehicles to the North Pole, go on underwater excursions, take tender rides off the coast of secluded islands, enjoy tailor-made tours of historical and cultural sites in coastal destinations, discover animal species – while respecting their ecosystems – and even take part in scientific field trips.
In 2021, the show debuted its new badge system, which divides attendees into groups depending on their reason for attending the show. There will be one badge for approved buyers, one for buyers’ advisors and a badge for trade visitors. This will make it easier for private guests to board superyachts and reduce congestion on the wharfs and quais of the famous Port Hercule.
The Monaco Yacht Show is the perfect place to inspect the work of the best shipyards in the world. A raft of European builders will be represented, as well as shipyards from Australia, Asia and North America.
Famous designers will be showing off their latest concepts in the Yacht Design and Innovation Hub, with 25 designers featuring in outdoor stands and an exhibition tent.
Italy
Baglietto are one of the most forward thinking of the Italian shipyards, they recently unveiled plans for a seawater powered superyacht and are fresh from releasing their all aluminium line of 40 metre DOM 133 superyachts. These yachts have an impressive beam of 8 metres and experienced high sales upon release.
Features onboard these cutting-edge superyachts include a glass sided infinity pool and sleek design, dramatic, muscular lines which define a bold silhouette and a considerable interior volume of 398 Gross Tonnage. Lightweight Alumiunium construction and highly efficient hybrid diesel electric engines gives these vessels a respectable range of 3,500 nautical miles at 15 knots.
The DOM range is perfect for those looking for an unforgettably luxurious experience and Baglietto’s 165-year tradition of boat making informs design and construction at every corner. The company made many of the most important innovations in marine architecture, including the first ever hydrofoil in 1911.
Two of the most impressive superyachts Baglietto will display at the Monaco Yacht Show are 40 metre Attitude and 38 metre tri-deck cruiser, Enterprise. Attitude has a convertible swimming pool that can transform into more deck space and a two level beach club, while Enterprise includes larger internal volumes, a plumb bow and transatlantic range.
The Netherlands
While it doesn’t have the 100 plus years of tradition of some other Dutch builders, Oceanco has been creating very impressive, and very large superyachts since its inception in 1987.
It has built an unprecedented total of 21 superyachts over 80 metres in length in the last 35 years. Five of these yachts were the longest superyachts in the world upon completion.
106 metre, three masted sailing superyacht Black Pearl and the supremely efficient Bravo Eugenia are amongst the shipyard’s recent achievements. In 2022, they launched two 100 metre plus superyachts, 109 metre Seven Seas and 117 metre Infinity.
The Dutch builder does not seem to be slowing down and is currently working on eight projects, all over 80 metres in length. The longest of which, 127 metre Project Y721, being built for Amazon founder and billionaire Jeff Bezos, has recently garnered the attention of the media over abandoned plans to dismantle a Dutch bridge to allow the hull to pass under it.
Oceanco also recently made a foray into the world of Non Fungible Tokens, releasing a line of Superyacht NFTs.
Germany
Industry heavyweights Lürssen will be displaying the biggest superyacht at this year’s Monaco Yacht Show in the form of 115 metre masterpiece Ahpo. The German shipyard has an illustrious resume and has built some of the most memorable and innovative vessels in Europe, including Paul Allen’s 126 metre superyacht, Octopus and the largest charter yacht in the world, Flying Fox.
Lürssen-built superyachts currently hold the lofty title of largest superyacht in the world with Dilbar at 15,917 gross tonnage, and longest superyacht in the world with 180 metre Azzam.
This year the shipyard launched the ultra efficient hybrid diesel electric superyacht Project Blue, which at 160 metres is the fifth longest superyacht in the ocean. This maintains Lürssen’s reputation for building the largest, most awe-inspiring vessels on the water.
Italy
Ferretti have had a big year, apart from showing off some beautiful examples of Italian boating pride at the Sydney International Boat Show, the Italian company has seen order books fill up and are busier than ever launching superyachts and raising more than A$360 million in a Hong Kong based IPO.
At the Monaco Yacht Show, they are set to impress attendees with a range of offerings from the well known superyacht brands that all fall under the Ferretti Group umbrella, including yachting icons such as Riva, CRN, Custom Line and Wally.
The scope for buyers to choose between not only a wide selection of yachts made by each brand, but to pick and choose the brand that most suits them is one of the main advantages of buying a superyacht from Ferretti Group.
The brands on offer are a varied mix of incredibly well established builders like 180 year old Riva, which will have three yachts on display, including Bellissima, a Riva 130′.
Other Ferretti Group brands at the Monaco Yacht Show such as exciting newcomers Wally and renowned superyacht builder CRN will have their own masterpieces on display, to truly give attendees the benefit of choosing between a wide variety of luxury vessels.
Wally will be showing a WallyWhy 200, Custom line will be displaying two 40 metre yachts and CRN have booked a berth for two 50-metre plus superyachts.
Although not a superyacht, the Riva Iseo will make an appearance in Monaco and is certain to make waves. The 8.2 metre day boat is the first all-electric offering from a company that specialises in meeting innovation with the most up-to-date boat building technology.
The Parker GVM310 engine is no slouch and can deliver a 40 knot top speed with the typical electric propulsion acceleration, owing to her 300kW of power.
As for the burning question of range, Riva have said that in “economy” mode the Iseo can cruise for up to 10 hours. It did not specify the speed at which it can achieve this, but have said that cruising speed is a respectable 25 knots.
The Netherlands
One of the older Dutch shipyards, Royal Huisman earned the denotation “Royal” after being recognised by the Dutch Royal Family for 100 years of excellence in terms of yacht making. Although much of their history involves the building of sailing yachts, they have made some very successful ventures into the motor yacht sector.
One of their most highly awarded and respected sailing yachts of recent times is Wendy Shmidt’s 46 metre superyacht Elfje. At this year’s Monaco Yacht Show, Royal Huisman will be displaying 57 metre performance flybridge ketch, Twizzle and 50.58 metre schooner Borkumriff IV.
Not ones to shy away from a challenge, the Dutch shipyard built all-aluminium 58.5 metre motoryacht, Phi, to much acclaim. She is the longest yacht in the world under 500 gross tonnage and features a futuristic fast displacement hull which allows a brisk top speed of 22 knots and striking laser lines along her hull.
Italy
One of Italy’s largest superyacht producers by length, Sanlorenzo will be showing off some of its steel superyachts at this year’s Monaco Yacht Show, namely a 52Steel and 62Steel.
The shipyard is very active in the art world and is a major sponsor of the Basel Art Show. In 2020 the Italian builder launched a long-term collaboration with the Peggy Guggenheim Collection in Venice.
Apart from conducting research into hydrogen conversion and fuel cell technology, Sanlorenzo has been very busy over the last few years with yearly profits seeing considerable increases.
The company has spent their time developing the 500 Exp, a 47-metre explorer yacht with a tiny 2.75 metre draft, a tender garage for seven metre vessels and a helipad.
If luxurious cruises around the Mediterranean or Caribbean are more your thing, the Sanlorenzo stand at the Monaco Yacht Show is definitely worth a visit. Known for their incomparable eye for detail and cultivated build quality, Italian-built superyachts do not get much more sophisticated and stylish than those created at the builder’s vast La Spezia facilities.

With roots dating back to the 19th century and involving military ship building for the Italian Royal Marines, Benetti were one of the premiere yacht builders of the late 20th century.
They experienced great success in the 60s with their range of Luxury Motor Yachts. They are famous for building the Legendary 84 metre Nabila in 1979 for Saudi businessman Adnan Khashoggi.
The renowned shipyard didn’t stop there and has released some of the largest and most impressive megayachts of recent times, including James Packer’s 108-metre, A$260 million IJE, as well as hybrid engine, azimuth propelled efficiency king, 108-metre Luminosity.
Benetti has a reputation for building superyachts that are the epitome of luxury, Luminosity continues this tradition with onboard features such as a wall of white, illuminated Magnolia flowers that electronically open when someone walks past, mimicking our connection with nature.
Benetti will be displaying one of their most grandiose and opulent pleasure craft in Monaco this year, a 65 metre, six deck stunner FB270, which promises to be a real hit.
Monaco
Another relatively young superyacht builder and many would agree, one of the most exciting in the fold is Monaco-based Wally Yachts.
Founded in 1994 by Milanese entrepreneur Luca Bassani, Wally first concentrated on building gorgeous sailing yachts, before making the switch into motor yachts in the early naughties. They now have an exciting future and are definitely a brand to watch.
Their current range includes tenders, sailing yachts, day boats and a few superyachts, but at the Monaco Yacht Show Wally Yachts will be displaying a WallyWhy 200, their 27 metre, mid range cruiser.
Naval architecture is by Laurent Giles and interior design has been provided by Vallicelli Design Studio to produce a luxurious vessel that can also be registered as under 24 metres with its 23.98 metre load line length, making it more financially viable to own one.
Wally has questioned the status quo when it comes to beam size in this cutting edge design and take advantage of a supremely efficient hull design to enable it to be much wider than comparable superyachts.
Wally’s list of sailing yachts is illustrious and their sailing yachts are very quickly becoming the most sought after in the yachting world. The generously volumed Saudade is just one example of Wally’s ability to listen to clients wishes and deliver a fast, competitive luxury sailing yacht.

There will be three Feadship superyachts at the Monaco Yacht Show, 41.5 metre Lady Charlotte, 46 metre Kiss and 65 metre Callisto, which will be displayed by Camper and Nicholsons.
Kiss was launched on Valentine’s day in 2015 and with its striking hull and sleek styling is sure to turn heads at this year’s show.
She has an impressive nine metre beam and tiny draft of 2.28 metres, allowing her to cruise in complete comfort and style into inaccessible bays and lagoons.
Feadship was formed by a group of Dutch shipyards after World War Two with the intention of cornering the lucrative American market. They adopted the use of steel and aluminium very early on and quickly became one of the late 20th century’s most successful builders.
Their more recent projects include A$352 million, 110 metre Anna, with striking, streamlined exteriors by Michael Leach Design. As a builder, Feadship have the distinct advantage of having their own in-house naval architects.
Each Feadship superyacht is crafted of the highest quality materials and to the highest standards. They continue to set a benchmark for the rest of the yacht building industry with cutting edge designs and near perfect build quality.
Yachting season is in full swing and for those of us who like to enjoy luxury cruising, fishing and just being on the water there is no better time to think about what our next maritime adventure will entail.
Fancy Nautica was on the ground at the Sydney International Boat Show in July to talk to the experts and see the exciting new releases, plus some old favourites from companies such as Ferretti, Gulf Craft, Riva and Princess Yachts.
