Sydney’s emerging tech precinct around Central Station has taken another big step forward, with the $3 billion Central Place Sydney gaining development approval.
The two-tower project is one of a group of developments clustered in an area around the station, dubbed Tech Central by the state government and earmarked as a state significant precinct.

Central Place Sydney is being developed jointly by the Australian arm of Singaporean powerhouse Frasers Property and locally-listed Dexus. When built, it will add 130,000 square metres of commercial floor space to the precinct.
Also in the neighbourhood is the new corporate headquarters of tech giant Atlassian, which is already under construction, along with a project by Toga, which includes the historical former parcels post office.
Kimberley Jackson, project director for Central Place Sydney, said the project was aiming to establish benchmarks for sustainability, including through workplaces that maximise the use of daylight and natural ventilation, while tapping into renewable energy.
“We are working with start-ups and neighbouring universities to explore innovations in technology and circular economy, all intended to support the development ambitions for carbon reduction and provide the best possible workplace experience for tenants and customers,” she said.
Designed by architects Fender Katsalidis and Skidmore, Owings & Merrill, the project includes two towers of 35 and 37 levels. At their base is a third building of eight storeys, known as The Connector, which has been designed by Edition Office to enliven the Henry Deane Plaza.
Nearby in the Tech Central precinct, IP Generation is working on a redevelopment of the historic Brewery Yard, where fintech success Afterpay, which was acquired by Block, formerly Square, last year, will move its headquarters.
Tech Central covers 24 hectares in all, including an ambitious plan by the state government to extend a deck over the rail yards of Central Station, an infrastructure project that could cost $3 billion.
